Hugh Griffin


Hugh is a recognised leader in corporate and commercial law, mergers and acquisitions and in the specialist field of financial services and funds management law.

Hugh’s experience ranges from working with leading domestic and international financial institutions, including some of the largest and most sophisticated clients in the world, to boutique and small cap companies. Hugh spent the entirety of his former career at Allen and Overy, a Tier 1 leading global law firm, and Clayton Utz, a tier 1 leading Australian law firm.

A commercially savvy lawyer, Hugh excels at providing timely, technically astute and pragmatic advice that is sensitive to a clients’ wider commercial objectives. Hugh has a have a proven track record of dealing with complex transactions and providing considered counsel in demanding situations. A natural leader, Hugh has built an amazing team of technically savvy lawyers at Hazelbrook.

Prior to starting Hazelbrook Legal, Hugh practised in top tier and magic circle Australian and global law firms in Sydney, Canberra and Hong Kong for over a decade, and has worked in-house for leading financial institutions.

Hugh holds a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Science (Hons I) from the Australian National University, and is a Fellow of FINSIA.


Petrina Schiavi

Senior Associate

A highly experienced commercial and corporate lawyer, Petrina excels at distilling complex legal problems into manageable solutions, and providing pragmatic and thorough advice.

Petrina is a contract law specialist and works with a variety of clients from large companies through to technology start-ups across a range of jurisdictions. Petrina has a depth of experience in commercial property, and has provided legal advice on development projects locally and interstate, including large greenfield developments and diversified commercial projects.

Clients appreciate Petrina’s clear communication style, technically astute advice and her fearless negotiating style.

In recognition of her excellent work, Petrina has recently been nominated as a finalist in the Lawyers Weekly Australian Law Awards for Senior Associate of the Year.

A published academic in the areas of energy governance, renewable energy and corporate social and environmental performance, Petrina also has a keen interest in startups, innovation, renewable energy and corporate environmental, social and governance issues. Petrina is also an active member of the South East Region of Renewable Energy Excellence (SERREE).

Petrina is Member of the Board of Directors for the National Foundation for Australian Women, a Member of Responsible Investment Association Australia, the Reconciliation Action Plan Working Group of the ACT Law Society, the ACT Women Lawyers Association, and is a mentor to final-year law students.

A distinguished graduate from the University of Queensland, along with a Bachelor of Laws, Petrina holds a Bachelor of Arts (Hons I) and a PhD in Sociology.



Lawrence Monagle

Senior Associate

Lawrence has a depth of experience across a wide range of corporate and commercial matters. His strengths lie in his insightfulness, ability to anticipate his clients’ needs and his straightforward communication style.

A finalist in the Lawyers Weekly, Australian 30 under 30 Lawyers Awards, Lawrence is a nationally recognised banking and finance lawyer.

Lawrence has worked on a number of high profile cross-border transactions including the sale of ASX listed ITL Healthcare, to Nasdaq-listed Merit Medical Systems Inc. and acted for Argyle Foods Group, a large national diversified agricultural business on a vertical integration and capital raising.

Lawrence is a highly experienced corporate and financial services lawyer with particular expertise in:

  • Mergers and acquisitions (public and private), private equity, divestments and disposals,
  • Corporate advisory – general corporate governance and corporate restructuring;
  • Funds Management -fund establishment for both wholesale and retail managed investment schemes and other collective investment vehicles, providing advice to responsible entities and investment managers in relation Product Disclosure Statements, information memoranda and other offer documentation/ Advice relation to investment managed agreements and distribution agreements for financial products and general regulatory advice.
  • Financial Services – regulatory advice including AFSL applications and variations

Outside of work, Lawrence likes travelling overseas, learning languages, cross country running, wine and enjoying all things Bill Murray!

Lawrence holds a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Canberra.


Aabid Farouk

Senior Associate

A top-tier trained lawyer, Aabid is a technically excellent lawyer with strong commercial and corporate contract skills. He has a breadth of experience across a range of corporate matters including intellectual property, workplace relations and mergers and acquisitions.

Aabid has become trusted counsel to a range of diversified entities, working closely with Executives, Directors and Management to provide ongoing strategic legal input. His expertise and experience, particularly in the areas of commercial contracting and intellectual property matters  combined with his commercial acumen has been of critical value to his clients.   As external general counsel to many clients, Aabid  provides continuity and stability to businesses exposed to change,  uncertainty, and commercial and regulatory complexities.

Aabid has also worked on a number of high profile cross-border transactions including the sale of Australian listed ITL Healthcare, to Nasdaq-listed Merit Medical Systems Inc. and acted for Argyle Foods Group, a large national diversified agricultural business on a vertical integration and capital raising.  His legal expertise and ability to meet demanding timeframes mean clients are in safe hands.

Aabid has obtained exposure to businesses across various industry sectors and has advised on a number of complex commercial matters in high pressure situations. His corporate experience ranges from

  • negotiating advising and drafting a variety of commercial contracts, including with multinational organisations;
  • advising on corporate governance matters and assisting clients with their corporate secretarial and corporate compliance functions;
  • advising on and implementing business sale and purchases; and
  • advising on and assisting clients in relation to compliance with privacy and data protection laws.

This diverse background, coupled with his chartered accountancy qualification, has equipped Aabid with outstanding business acumen, and the ability to provide pragmatic commercially-focused solutions.

Aabid holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and Bachelor of Commerce and Administration (Accounting) from the Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. Aabid is also a Chartered Accountant  admitted to the College of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand.


James Fisher

Senior Lawyer

James joins Hazelbrook from EY Law where he worked as a corporate lawyer in Sydney and London, advising clients on private equity and mid-market mergers & acquisitions and multinational group reorganisations. James has advised a truly diverse range of clients from global conglomerates to local businesses in Australia, Europe and around the world. Highlights include listing billions of pounds of international debt as quoted Eurobonds for one of the USA’s largest oil refinery groups, and assisting a London-based PE firm with the acquisition of a listed Australian mineral exploration company via a scheme of arrangement.

James’ international experience and his cross-qualification as a Chartered Accountant and a former tax professional lends him credibility and insight across a full range of corporate and business matters throughout all phases of the business cycle. At Hazelbrook, James combines his breadth of experience with our commitment to high-quality and high-value legal services.

In coming to Hazelbrook, James is returning to his home town of Canberra with a small family in tow. He can’t wait for his twin boys to learn to ride with him on Canberra’s bike paths and mountain tracks, and grow up experiencing the exceptional quality of life that Canberra offers.

James holds a Master of Laws from the University of Sydney, and a Bachelor of Commerce/Laws from the Australian National University. James is admitted as a lawyer in both Australia and England & Wales, and is a member of Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand.


Michaela Janu


Michaela joins the Hazelbrook team from the Australian Public Service where she worked in parliamentary liaison and policy areas. Her experience during this time includes working in highly sensitive and challenging departments.

Michaela has acquired significant nous and an eye for detail, and she values accuracy and excellence. Michaela possesses comprehensive communications skills and excels in forming and building on professional relationships. In addition, Michaela has a passion for Intellectual Property, and whilst working on the cyber security policy at DHS, gained an appreciation for the significance of IP Law to technology.

In her role at Hazelbrook, Michaela assists the team in a wide range of areas including intellectual property, corporate contracts, corporate governance, commercial property, workplace relations and mergers and acquisitions.

Outside of work, Michaela enjoys hiking in Canberra’s beautiful national parks and spending time with family.

Michaela is a graduate from the University of Technology, Sydney, and holds a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Communication. Michaela also holds Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice through the College of Law.


Agustina Limpid


One of our newer team members, Agustina, brings a global outlook, entrepreneurial experience and practical corporate expertise to Hazelbrook Legal. Agustina has lived in 9 cities around the world (including in 5 global financial centres) and has a keen interest in cross-border commercial transactions. Time in these overseas markets has equipped Agustina with an awareness and adaptability to nuances within various market economies.

Prior to joining Hazelbrook, Agustina co-founded two companies in Singapore, Shanghai and Kuala Lumpur, which has given her unique insight into the challenges faced by businesses. This strong business acumen, combined with her legal knowledge, means Agustina is well placed to anticipate and provide effective legal solutions for commercial matters.

Agustina is currently completing a Juris Doctorate at the Australian National University, graduating in 2019, and holds a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) degree in Philosophy from the University of Southern California.

Agustina is also fluent in Chinese (Mandarin) and Bahasa Indonesia.


Jane Boyer


Jane has recently joined the Hazelbrook team and brings her interesting and varied background to her role as paralegal.  Jane has a passion for the law, particularly in the areas of contract and equity and is eager to see and experience the law in practice.  She also has a longstanding interest in politics, having worked for a Federal politician for a number of years.

Originally from Kyneton in regional Victoria, Jane moved to Canberra to study law at the ANU.  She enjoys the great combination of city and country that Canberra can provide. Outside of work Jane enjoys spending time outdoors bushwalking or playing Aussie Rules non-competitively.

Jane is currently studying a Juris Doctor at the Australian National University (graduating 2019), and also holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Melbourne.


Caleb Au


Caleb joins Hazelbrook as a Paralegal with experience in Magic Circle law, in-house legal at an investment bank and public sector policy. Growing up in Hong Kong before moving to Sydney to attend boarding school, Caleb has a strong international outlook and enjoys working with people of all cultures. This unique blend of experience means Caleb is highly adaptable to different environments and has experience delivering solutions across various sectors.

At work, Caleb is passionate about using his legal knowledge and commercial awareness to achieve outcomes for clients. Caleb is particularly interested in areas such as financial services law and funds management.

Caleb is in the final year of his Bachelor of Science (Chemistry)/Bachelor of Laws (Honours) degree and also speaks Mandarin and Cantonese. Outside of study and work, Caleb enjoys reading the news and supporting his favourite team, Chelsea FC.


Sarah Dillicar

Executive Assistant and Office Administrator

Sarah is our hardworking and enthusiastic executive assistant and office administrator.  She brings a strong service background and an eye for detail to support the legal team in delivering the best possible outcomes for our clients.

At Hazelbrook, Sarah performs many administrative tasks which underpin the smooth operation of the firm, from organising and maintaining files, matters and emails; managing client interactions; assisting with correspondence and providing a wide range of support to our legal team. With her proactive, helpful and diligent attitude, she is a valued member of the Hazelbrook team.

Outside of work, Sarah is passionate about the creative arts and has an advanced diploma from the New York Film Academy. She also loves to travel and explore what the world and Canberra has to offer.


Mayson Brommer

Practice Manager

Mayson is our dedicated and hardworking practice manager who brings her strong service and management experience to deliver positive client outcomes. With a keen eye for detail and a calm demeanour, Mayson ensures that clients, stakeholders, and opposing lawyers alike receive the best possible service. Mayson also provides exceptional legal support assisting the team with a wide range of matters from commercial property through to specialist financial services advice.

Through her time at Hazelbrook, Mayson has assisted with a wide range of operational initiatives, and performs tasks critical to the smooth running of the firm. Mayson also provides executive assistance to our principal Hugh, ensuring that tasks are completed on time and nothing is missed or forgotten.

An efficient and organised team member, Mayson is essential to the team’s success.

Outside of work, Mayson is a talented and passionate baker, who never fails to impress us with her delicious creations.

Mayson is currently studying a Bachelor of Arts double majoring in Psychology and Education through Massey University in New Zealand (despite Petrina’s best efforts to have her study law).


Annabel Griffin

Strategy & Operations

Annabel holds a combined Bachelor of Economics and Commerce from the Australian National University, and has worked in a range of challenging banking and consulting roles, domestically and internationally.

Annabel has a keen interest in the practice of law firms, and is particularly interested in the interaction between business, technology and law. Passionate about business, Annabel is a high achiever and has an exceptional work ethic. She is constantly seeking better ways of doing things – in particular challenging the status quo of the way in which law firms operate.

Her role is pivotal in driving the business to where our staff can add the most value ensuring client’s receive the best possible service experience.  Annabel is also focused on the wellbeing of our people, and the team as a whole, ensuring people receive the support they need.

Annabel’s entrepreneurial attitude and non-legal background bring a truly unique dimension to Hazelbrook Legal.
